16 day BEE program landing in Nice and winding through Provence, central France, the Loire Valley to Paris

See historic Nîmes; the papal palace of Avignon; the diverse influences in Lyon; be fascinated and engaged by the science parks of Vulcania and Futurosope; explore the castle of the Loire and pay respects to the fallen on the Somme as have a taster of Paris.

This tour is part of our BEE (Budget Educational Experience) program. You will land at Nice airport and be met by your TETC representative, who provide you with all necessary documentation and escort you to your coach. Your driver will take you to your hotel where you will settle in and you have free time until dinner.

Spend the day exploring Nice. You might want to walk through the Vieille Nice and along the long beach Promenade des Anglais, visit the Russian Orthodox cathedral of St Nicolas with the colourful onion-style domes, the Museums for artists Chagall or Matisse, explore the garden of the Cimiez Monastry or the small baroque Palais Lascaris. Nice has many places of interest for Arts, History and Culture!

Across France are numerous examples of Ancient Rome with buildings, viaducts, baths, crypts and ruins. Nîmes was an important Roman settlement in this part of France, sitting between Provence and Languedoc. It has strong Mediterranean influences from Occitanie and even Andalusia (Spain) with festivals of bull-fighting and flamenco and numerous Roman Catholic religious festivals on Feast days. Be close enough to touch 2000 years of history when you visit the Maison Carrée, one of the best-preserved Roman Temples in France.

Known variously as the seat of the Roman Catholic Pope during the 1300s, and for its famous bridge the Pont Saint-Bénézet (better known as the Pont d’Avignon), Avignon has a wealth of history in its streets and buildings radiating out from the Place de l’Horloge – an old fortified tower that was converted in the 1400s. Also central in location and the life of the medieval city is the Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), which you will visit. It is considered the biggest Gothic edifice in all of Europe and listed as a World Heritage site.

Today will be travelling due North to Lyon. Break your journey with a stop at Montélimar which is famous for traditional Nougat. You will visit one of the nougat factories, before heading north again, to Lyon.

Arrive in Lyon in the afternoon and begin your exploration of this city with a remarkable history!

Lyon was established in Roman times in 43 CE. It sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers and is now France’s third largest city. It is the famous for the production of silk fabrics, foods and the Renaissance buildings of Vieux Lyon. Discover the network of traboules, shortcuts through much of the centre of Lyon which were created by the Canuts but were later used by the Resistance! During WWII, Lyon was still in free France until 1942 and General De Gaulle later proclaimed Lyon was “the Capital of the Resistance”. Apart from its many historical landmarks, Lyon is also where the Lumière Brothers invented the Cinématograph that was one of the key inventions for modern cinema. Walking through the streets of around Lyon you can see the different ages and you may even find the trompe d’oeil tribute to key characters from Lyon – the Fresque des Lyonnais!

After breakfast at your hotel, check out and jump on the coach to spend the day at Vulcania, where you will visit numerous exhibits and interactive experiences such as the Abyss Explorer, the Tunnel of Pyroclastic Surges, the Earth Machine, Earth Revealed and the Greenhouse! See demonstration the thermo-dynamics of eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis, landscape and biodiversity.

Check out of your accommodation in Clermont-Ferrand after breakfast. Your coach will take you to the city of Poitiers, arriving at lunchtime. Now a modern city, Poitiers still shows the marks of the past: you may want to explore the early-gothic cathedral Notre-Dame-la-Grande; the Palais de Justice, which began as a palace for the ruling Dukes; the medieval Hôtel Fumé (named for the family Fumé) in gothic design; the Renaissance-inspired Town Hall; the modern boulevards of the 18thC. Discover how Poitiers has been the hotspot for key times in the history of France.

Discover the Energy Gardens which numerous hands-on activities to educate students about geothermal energy, wind power, biomass, solar energy and the importance of sustainable energy creation. Understand more about Space and where our planet fits in with Cosmic Collisions in the amazing 3D planetarium. In the Mysteries of the Unseen World, this National Geographic production reveals those things that are two fast, slow or small for us to discern with the naked eye. Buy your lunch at the park and wind your day up at 4pm, when your coach will transfer you to Tours.

After breakfast, your coach will take you through the Loire. Of the many beautiful and restored castles in the Loire, you will have a stop at Chateau Chambord. Explore the magnificent rooms have housed royalty of France foreigners in exile for 500 years. Although largely undamaged by the French Revolution and subsequent wars, it was looted and neglected until the Duke of Bordeaux – also known as the Count of Chambord – began restoring the chateau from the 1820s. After his death, the property was claimed by the State in 1930, with compensation to his heirs. You will have time for lunch and board your coach again for your transfer to Paris, where you will arrive in the early afternoon.

After breakfast at your hotel, your coach will take you to the Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretoneux and the brand new, interactive Sir John Monash Centre located behind the War Memorial. After lunch you will be taken into the town of Villers-Bretonneux. Since World War I, their school children have been exhorted to “N’Oublions Jamais L’Australie”. The citizens of Australia wanted to build a school hall for the town and it is now a community centre and Franco-Australian Museum, which has an extensive collection from the war.

On your last day in France, use your Hop-On-Hop-Off bus ticket to see central Paris ranging from the Louvre, Opera Garnier, Notre Dame cathedral, Musée D’Orsay, Place de la Concorde, the Arc de Triomphe, from where you can walk down the Champs Elysée to the Grand Palais and continue on to Trocadero, past the Eiffel Tower, see the Hôtel des Invalides and walk along the Seine, until you meet back at the hotel at 5pm to collect your luggage to depart for the airport.
