A live case study on the 2020 Independence Referendum
Captain James Cook was the first European to sight New Caledonia, on 4 September 1774. From then on, the History of the group of islands was shaped by an array of factors including evangelisation, sandal-wood trading, blackbirding, migration, deportations, mining, political uprising, economic growth and geopolitics. New Caledonia has gradually acceded to a very large autonomy from France, and a second referendum on the question of Independence from France is scheduled for 2020. New Caledonia is one of our Pacific neighbours, less than 3 hours flight from Australia.
